1960’s to 1970s
Hippies- a group of people who protested against war and instead for peace (1967)
Punks- A subculture of fast pace music against selling out which had a DIY ethic involved (1976)
1980’s to 1990s
Gothic- An offshoot of post-punk music with fashion drawing from historical periods such as Victorian and Edwardian (1980)
Grunge- A hybrid of punk and metal without the speed of punk with fashion that includes flannels and thrift store clothing (the Mid 1980s)
Ska-punk- Combines Reggae fashion with punk fashion much like their music (The mid-late 1990s)
2000’s
Emotional pop-punk/post-hardcore (aka “Emo”)- a subculture of music that tends to have emotionally confessional lyrics (in the case of post-hardcore by screaming) and which fashion includes band t-shirts, eyeliner, studded belts, and black ripped skinny jeans
